An Interview With...Lord Victor Adebowale

'An Interview with... Lord Victor Adebowale’:  the Chief Executive of Turning Point shares his experiences of being part of the NHS Future Forum and reveals he prefers tennis to cricket

19 July 2011

Lord Victor Adebowale, Chief Executive of the national social business Turning Point, discusses being a member of the NHS Future Forum and presenting recommendations to the government on the NHS reforms in the latest edition of “An Interview With…” the monthly podcast series by The Social Investment Business. Adebowale praises the leadership of Professor Steve Field, chairman of the NHS Future Forum, and the creation of a platform for credible change, but highlights that a longer listening period before the Bill had been written may have been more effective.

Overall Adebowale shares a positive outlook for the NHS. He suggests that providing services which integrate health and social care and ensure a personalised experience for the patient present the biggest opportunities for social enterprises to get more involved in the sector. Adebowale also calls for a redefinition of commissioning, more co-created services where patients are involved in their design and for social businesses to be more risk aware not risk averse when delivering services.

Adebowale also tells of his experience of being a peer, saying the most rewarding part is representing the views of people who are often affected by government policy but who aren’t usually part of the conversation. Finally, Adebowale reveals a preference for tennis over cricket in the quick fire quiz.
