‘An Interview with... Stephen Bubb’: The ACEVO chief says he aims to be controversial, wants social investors and commercial lenders to work more closely together and prefers Digestives over Hobnobs
Monday 8th November 2010
Stephen Bubb, Chief Executive of ACEVO and Chair of The Social Investment Business has admitted he likes to be controversial and emphasises the need for more links between social investors and commercial financial institutions in the first edition of a new series of monthly podcasts from The Social Investment Business.
Bubb expresses concerns that spending cuts could “hack away at the foundations of civil society”, and says what civil society organisations need the most at this time is access to capital to scale up to compete with big business. In ‘An Interview With...Stephen Bubb’ he calls the Big Society an “amorphous concept” but agrees with the government’s desire to expand the role of civil society organisations in delivering public services. In the eight minute question and answer session Bubb says the Big Society provides an opportunity to expand the role for charities and social enterprises in public life, singles out Alt Valley Community Trust in the Croxteth area of Liverpool as an example of social investment making a real impact in a community and, in a quick fire quiz, reveals a preference for Digestives over Hobnobs.
‘An Interview With..’ is a new series of short interviews with leading figures in social enterprise and civil society from The Social Investment Business. The podcast is just one new feature in the new resources section on The Social Investment Business website which now includes videos, audio and a directory of useful sector links.
